Welcome to African Musical Instruments, makers of high-quality African Instruments for over four decades. In the Global Village our hut is the one with the Music and Laughter coming out of it, intermingled with the Spicy smell of Sneezewood. For 40 years we have produced the Original Hugh Tracey Kalimbas, the first and still proclaimed world-wide as the best. But now making Kalimbas is only a small part of what we do; step inside and take a look.....

To our knowledge, AMI is the only Musical Instruments factory in Africa. We produce a large range of African instruments which have evolved out of the research done by Ethno Musicologists Hugh Tracey and his son Andrew. We employ local people and we encourage our members to learn to play the instruments they produce.

African Musical Instruments (AMI) is located in Grahamstown, home of the second-largest Arts Festival in the world. Grahamstown is in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa, about 40 kilometres from the coast and within easy driving from the nearest airport city, Port Elizabeth.
